My approach to supervision is based on following an integrative model. I draw on the Discrimination Model (Bernard, 1979), flexibly shifting roles between teacher, counselor, and consultant depending on your developmental needs. I also use the Integrated Developmental Model (IDM) to assess and support your growth, focusing on self-awareness, autonomy, and case conceptualization. In my integrative approach, I incorporate elements of person-centered supervision, modeling my approach to therapy, with an emphasis on empathy, authenticity, and collaboration. I also attend to multicultural, systemic, and contextual factors that influence both client and supervisee development. Supervision is both evaluative and supportive, with the aim of enhancing clinical skills, professional identity, and ethical practice.
My goals in supervision are to ensure ethical, competent, and effective client care. I also strive to support the supervisee’s development of conceptualization skills while supporting growth with understanding and effectively utilizing evidence-based strategies. Additional goals include promoting professional growth and a supervisee’s identity as a counselor. This is done by working towards fostering self-awareness, including countertransference and use of self in therapy. I also strive to encourage a supervisee’s ability to reflect on diversity, equity, and cultural humility as it relates to the supervisee’s practice.
As your supervisor, I adhere to the CCE Approved Supervisor (ACS) Code of Ethics as well as the ACA Code of Ethics. You are responsible for following the Code of Ethics applicable to your credentialing body. As a counselor I also follow the NBCC’s Code of Ethics and The Practice of Internet Counseling
In addition to adhering to the ACS Code of Ethics and the ACA Code of Ethics, I work in compliance with the New Jersey Board of Marriage and Family Therapy Examiners and Professional Counselor Examiners Committee, as well as the Pennsylvania State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Professional Counselors.
